DIY Compost Tumbler Update

May 29 is National Learn about Composting Day!
To celebrate NLACD, here’s a quick update. Last October, I posted a blog called How to make a Do-It-Yourself Compost Tumbler using nothing more than a couple 32-gallon trash bins, a power drill and some bungee cord. The DIY version is far easier to assemble, a lot less expensive, and has a much bigger capacity than most factory-made compost tumblers.

Last weekend, I finally harvested the finished compost from one of my DIY tumblers. When I opened the lid, it was about three-quarters full of lovely finished compost. The few food items that hadn’t quite broken down all the way, I simply transferred to the other compost tumbler, breaking them up a bit more with a spade. The rest was soft and crumbly, smelling rich and earthy, exactly like it needed to.

Composting this way is easy, sanitary and very rewarding. How satisfying to know that the food waste I had successfully diverted from the landfill all last year was now being used to re-nourish the soil in the flower beds in front of my house!
